What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a complimentary healing modality used for relaxation, health, and wellness. It involves the gentle laying on of hands (not massage), as well as working in the energy field that surrounds and flows through the body.

Medical research has shown that it enhances overall feelings of well being and boosts the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki has been accepted into hospitals all across the country, including The Cleveland Clinic and UCLA Medical Center.

I am a Reiki Master Teacher in the Usui/Tibetan Reiki tradition. I offer in-person Reiki sessions in the Asheville, NC area and distance sessions to people anywhere in the world. I also offer Reiki classes in my home studio in North Carolina, as well as in Ohio, and most recently through the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment at their Houston, Texas location.

I am open to traveling anywhere in the world to bring Reiki to you and your community, so please feel free to contact me if you are interested in learning more!

How Does It Work?
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words--Rei, meaning "spiritually guided," and Ki, meaning "life force energy." Reiki works on the energy biofield that surrounds all living things. Our bodies are constantly creating energy at each and every moment, and the energy we create effects the way we feel and function. From daily stresses and immune-system challenges to long-term illnesses and broader life issues, we all encounter situations that have the potential to create imbalances in the way energy moves through our bodies.

Reiki is a safe, relaxing, and effective way to rebalance the body's energy flow and help the immune system do its job.

And that's only the beginning. It is simple enough to look at Reiki as a relaxation technique that benefits overall health and well being, but that is far from the end of the story. In my experience, the sky's the limit for what Reiki can achieve.

Reiki is a tool for clearing the way towards being our best self and achieving our highest purpose in life. Our energy systems not only help our physical bodies feel better, they also effect our entire life experience, including the kind of energies that we draw to us. When we are out of balance, we are more likely to sabotage our goals, for example. Reiki can help to set us back on the path towards our happiest, healthiest way of living!

Is Reiki Just for People?
Nope! Reiki is good for pretty much anything you can imagine. Beyond helping people through physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual issues, Reiki can do the same for animals. In fact, I have found that animals are incredibly receptive to Reiki. I love to work on animals, and would be more than happy to do Reiki on your animal companions. Or, maybe you'd like to invite me over to Reiki your garden, or a particular plant that has been struggling. All living things can benefit from good energy being sent their way.

And it doesn't end there. Reiki can be used to clear away negative energy from objects, spaces, and places, as well, and to refill them with loving, positive energy.

Many of us are familiar with the Physics 101 concept of potential energy. The Oxford Dictionary defines potential energy as "the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors." This is one way to think about how Reiki works on objects, spaces, and places. In recognizing that inanimate objects can and do store energy within them, it is not so much of a leap to consider that objects, spaces, and places can hold the energy of the people and events that occur in, around, and on them.

Reiki can be used to clear away negative, confusing, or just plain old, stale energies from anything or anywhere. Additionally, if you think your object, space, or place is carrying an undesirable connection to a spirit person, please visit my page about Spirit Sessions.

Reiki Is Not Massage
Reiki can involve "the laying on of hands," but it is not massage. In fact, during most of my sessions, I am working around my client on their energy field more often than I am placing my hands on them.

Do I Need to Believe in Something for Reiki to Work?
Nope! If you are an atheist or agnostic, Reiki will still work. If you are Catholic or Presbyterian or Baptist or Islamic or Jewish or Buddhist or Wiccan or any other religion, Reiki will still work. Reiki is not contained within any religion, nor does it contradict any. It requires no belief system, and anyone can learn it or experience it.

As an aside, for those of you that do connect with a specific set of religious beliefs, it can be a beautiful thing to process Reiki through your own belief system. I leave it to each and every individual to decide for themselves where Reiki fits into their understanding of the universe... and I am also happy to share my thoughts if you have questions! :)

So... What Does Reiki Feel Like?
The experience of Reiki energy is unique to each person and, even with the same person, will likely be unique from session to session. Some of the most common feedback I have heard from my clients is that it feels like a tingling sensation, and that it sometimes feels hot or cold. Some clients have also reported sensations of weightlessness during treatment, and some have noted the sensation of hands-on work on various areas of the body when no hands were being laid on them. Still others sit or lie quietly with their eyes closed for the duration of the session and simply report being relaxed afterward. There is no one type of experience that means that Reiki is working, while another means it is not. Reiki works no matter what! Plus, the energy doesn't just stop working when the session if over; Reiki starts a positive energy domino effect in your body and in your life that can continue for days after a treatment.

I am currently offering in-person Reiki treatments in the greater Asheville, NC area, as well as distance Reiki treatments to anyone, anywhere! Please check out my page about distance Reiki for more information about what that is and how it works.

When Do I Need Reiki?
Maybe you feel just fine... so why would you need Reiki? Have you ever waited until you were parched to get a glass of water? It feels great to drink that glass, but by the time you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

The same is true for Reiki. Of course Reiki is wonderful for when you're feeling low or ill or have an injury... but helping your body maintain balance before you hit a low point can give you a boost of energy to help you go from "okay" or "good" to GREAT. :) When we're coming from a place of calm and clarity, we have the energy to think beyond putting out daily fires and focus on long-term life goals and far-reaching happiness. There is never a bad time to get Reiki.
